Are you ready to plan for, “Next Year in Jerusalem?”

Here are five essential travel tips for Israel to make your journey smooth and memorable during the time of year when every major religion has a major holiday.

1. Maybe don’t go? Especially for a first-time visitor to Israel.

What you say?   Don’t go to Israel for the Passover holiday?  BUT, that’s the exact opposite of what we pray for every year at Seder?  The reality is, Passover is a holiday celebrated at home with friends and family.  During the first two days and last two days of the holiday many tourist sites are closed (think Shabbat) and during chol hamoed pesach (the middle of the holiday) many businesses are only open for limited hours or 1/2 days.

Now that we’ve settled on planning to go at a different time of year here are the other 4 tips we at Makin’ Memories Travel have for you.

2. Respect the Local Customs and Traditions: Israel is a diverse country with a rich cultural heritage.

As a visitor, it’s important to respect the local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, especially when visiting Israeli religious sites, and be mindful of local sensitivities. It’s also important to understand the local norms and etiquette, such as avoiding public displays of affection in conservative areas. By being respectful and sensitive to the local culture, you can create a positive and meaningful experience during your trip.

3. Stay Hydrated and Use Sun Protection.

Israel is known for its hot and sunny weather, especially during the summer months. To stay healthy and comfortable, make sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day. Also, use sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the harsh sun rays. It’s a good idea to carry a water bottle with you and refill it at the many water fountains available in cities and tourist sites.

4. Stay Informed about the Security Situation: Israel has a complex geopolitical landscape, and the security situation can change rapidly.

Before traveling to Israel, it’s important to stay informed about the current security situation in the region. Check the latest travel advisories issued by your government and follow the advice of local authorities. Avoid traveling to areas with travel warnings, and be prepared for security checks at public places such as airports, train stations, and malls. It’s always best to stay vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and exercise caution.

5. Try the Local Cuisine and Explore the Unique Attractions.

Israeli cuisine is a melting pot of flavors from various cultures, including Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and North African influences. Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in delicious local dishes such as hummus, falafel, shawarma, and fresh seafood.

Israel is also home to many unique attractions, from ancient archaeological sites to modern cities and stunning natural landscapes. Make sure to explore popular destinations like Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, the Dead Sea, and the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean coast. Don’t forget to interact with the friendly locals, who can provide valuable insights into the country’s history, culture, and way of life.

Bonus Tip: Explore Beyond the Usual Tourist Sites While Israel is famous for its religious and historic sites, there’s so much more to explore beyond the usual tourist spots.

Venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems and experience the local culture. Explore the vibrant arts scene in Tel Aviv, with its trendy galleries, street art, and live music venues. Take a dip in the salty waters of the Dead Sea, known for its therapeutic properties. Hike through the stunning landscapes of the Negev Desert, with its unique rock formations and breathtaking vistas. Visit the ancient city of Akko, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its well-preserved Crusader architecture and bustling market. By exploring beyond the usual tourist sites, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of Israel.

Bon voyage!
